The Agony and the Ecstasy
In the heart of the Lenten season, the West Village Chorale invites you on a spiritual journey, a kind of pilgrimage through the realms of deepest penitence and reflection, to the heights of transcendent joy. Not a Lenten concert in the traditional sense, we will instead travel, musically, from the valley of despair up to the mountain top. Along the way we will explore music of the season from the early Renaissance through the 19th and 20th centuries, up to the present day. Highlights of the journey will include choral classics by Allegri, Schein and Brahms, Hugo Distler's rarely performed masterpiece "Fürwahr, er trug unsere Krankheit," 20th century gems by Kevin Oldham and Moses Hogan, and one of Eric Whitacre's newest publications, the rhapsodically beautiful "Alleluia."
