Orchard Gallery Presents
This April marks not only the last NYUFF, but the completion of Orchard Gallery's three year stay on the Lower East Side. High time for a collaboration! We're proud to present a program of two under-seen classics curated by Orchard's Jason Simon.
Toute la Memoire du Monde By Alain Resnais 21:00 35mm on video 1956
Rock My Religion By Dan Graham 55:00 Video 1982-84
A double bill of history lessons, book ends from the camera-stylo to the video essay from Alain Resnais and Dan Graham in their most democratic modes, and with nothing less than the modern human condition in their sights! In Toute la Memoire du Monde, Alain Resnaiss study of the Bibliotheque National, the six-hundred year old home of ten million books is introduced as a tomb protecting the living from the memories contained there. Then Rock My Religion threads an analysis of American spiritualism from Shakers to Skin Heads with the idea that punk and its poets are heirs to America's unique legacy of Christian diaspora. These two beloved if rarely seen projects are high points of cinematic essay where analysis becomes object. Here it is the research essay, as distinct from the impressionistic or the autobiographical one, that transcends the spectacle and replaces sensation with knowledge from these authors of experience. -Jason Simon, Orchard
