The Children's Hour
Showcasing the destructive power of lies, the play depicts the experiences of the headmistresses of a girls boarding school. The two women, friends since college, are accused of conducting an illicit lesbian relationship by a bratty, compulsively lying student to disastrous effect.
Banned from being staged in London and Boston when it first debuted in 1934, the plays gay themes remain a significant milestone in American letters and an important piece of the contemporary American theatre repertoire. Directed by Neiry Rojo.
Framing her plots as battles between noble truth-tellers and venal dissemblers, was Hellman trying to investigate or absolve her own tendency to fabricate and falsify? In that light, The Childrens Hour works up a fascinatingly complex internal dialogue between what lies can do, and undo. - Seattle Times
The Childrens Hour has sturdy dramatic strengths, and one sus- pects that Arthur Miller must have learnt from it when writing The Crucible. - The Telegraph
