Palaver Strings: Parallel Freedoms
We find labels in every aspect of our world and lives. As musicians, weve been labeled from the day we started taking lessons. Some of us play fiddle, some play jazz, and others play classical violin. Parallel Freedoms is an exploration of the blurred lines between these worlds, where classical and jazz composers inspire one another, and where we as classically trained musicians are inspired to program, arrange, and improvise music that reflects these parallel explorations of freedom. From Debussys boundary- breaking string quartet to the string writing of Charlie Parker and Esperanza Spalding, from lush and lilting melodies to swinging rhythms, we express our love for music regardless of its genre.
Palaver Strings, a musician-led string orchestra and nonprofit organization, is dedicated to the collaborative interpretation of classical masterworks. Formally founded in 2014 by young musicians from the Boston area, the group has performed at the Kennedy Center, Bay Chamber Concerts, the Hammond Concert Series, and a celebration of the Lullaby Project at Carnegie Hall. Palaver is in a year long residency at the Boston Center for the Arts and continues their longstanding residency with Bay Chamber Concerts in Rockport, ME. Each member of Palaver Strings is passionate about taking classical music beyond the concert hall to engage with new and diverse audiences. It is in this personal and unconventional setting that Palaver Strings is able to use music to aid the discussion of social issues, promote education and healing, and inspire our peers and community to support the arts.
