Event
The Only Possible City - Sunday at 2:30pm (Part 3)
The films and videos in this program all explore the ways that cinema has both acquiesced to and challenged the desire to bind people and places to instantly accessible records of their presence. Focusing instead on the disjuncture between subjects and their images, events and their retelling, facts and values, these works are structurally split between a voice and the representations of a particular event, person or place. Through their respective considerations of the agency of speech and the conjunction of word and image, they foreground the constructed nature of positivist taxonomies and profiles to further destabilize the systems of classification whose identities the photographic index alone once guaranteed.
