Trio Da Kali
Trio Da Kali unites three outstanding musicians from the Mande culture of southern Mali who come from long lines of distinguished griots (hereditary musicians): vocalist Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté, daughter of the legendary griot singer Kassé Mady Diabaté; master balafonist Lassana Diabaté; and bass ngoni player Mamadou Kouyaté. Though originally formed to participate on a collaborative project with The Kronos Quartet, the Trios collective talent and experience allows them to shine brilliantly on their own. Hawas rich, expressive voice and her natural vibrato have brought comparisons to the great Mahalia Jackson. Lassanas ability on the balafon is considered one of Malis most astonishing, and he has recorded and toured with many of West Africas foremost artists including Toumani Diabates Grammy Award-nominated Afrocubism album and Symmetric Orchestra project. Mamadou, still in his mid-twenties, brings a contemporary feel to the traditions he has learnt from his father, world-renowned Grammy-nominated ngoni player Bassekou Kouyaté. Together, the artists of Trio Da Kali aim to bring a contemporary twist to ancient and neglected repertoires.
