Anaïs Mitchell
Anaïs Mitchell is a Vermont and Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter that has been captivating audiences with her distinctive voice and skillful songwriting since her 2002 debut album on Ani Difrancos Righteous Babe Records label, for which she recorded several albums before starting her own Wilderland label in 2012. Hailing from the world of narrative folksong, poetry and balladry, Mitchell manages to tackle themes relevant to the external landscape with the same emotional intimacy that she uses to describe her inner life. Among her recorded works are six full-length solo albums and two collaborative albums, including 2010's sensationally-reviewed Hadestown, a folk opera based on the Orpheus myth; 2012's Young Man in America, which was described by the UK's Independent as an epic tale of American becoming; and 2013s Child Ballads, a collaboration with Jefferson Hamer, which won a BBC Radio Two Folk Award for Best Traditional Track. Her stage production of Hadestown, which was ten years in the making, opened Off-Broadway in May 2016 to rave reviews, and was later extended twice in response to critical success and sell-out performances. As a live performer, she has headlined shows worldwide in addition to supporting tours for Bon Iver, Ani Difranco, The Low Anthem (all of whom appear as guest singers on Hadestown) Josh Ritter and the Punch Brothers.
This show will take place at Common Fence Music's Portsmouth Mainstage, an intimate 200 seat listening room located at Common Fence Point Hall, 933 Anthony Road, Portsmouth, RI. Doors open at 7pm, the show begins at 8pm. All Portsmouth shows are BYOB & picnic.
