A Chanukah concert like no other with: BOOK OF J and Israeli vocalist VICTORIA HANNA
Were proud to present one of the hippest and most original Chanukah concerts anywhere, featuring everything from Yiddish melodies to new psalms and stories told through blues and traditional American music (Book of J) and mesmerizing interpretations of traditional Jewish texts that combine traditional Middle Eastern sounds with rap, hip-hop, and more (Victoria Hanna).
WHAT IS BOOK OF J With the intense vocal stylings of Jewlia Eisenberg (Charming Hostess) and superb, blues-based guitar style of Jeremiah Lockwood (Sway Machinery), Book of J is engaged in new psalmody, drawing from the rich biblical commentary of Black and White American traditional music, Yiddish songs of ghosts and police violence, and piyutim (paraliturgical songs) with a queer bent, plus a Leonard Cohen song or two. Expect old-time religion, radical politics, angels and demons, workers and bosses, diasporic languages, erotic longing, close-text reading, hard times resolved and destiny fulfilled. Also, singing along is good.
WHO IS VICTORIA HANNA Jerusalem based artist, Victoria Hanna, is a world-renowned composer, creator, performer, researcher, and teacher of voice and language. Known for her mesmerizing interpretations of traditional Jewish texts (both Hebrew and Aramaic) that combine traditional Middle Eastern sounds with rap, hip-hop and more, her first video single Aleph-Bet became an instant internet sensation with over a million views.
In her work, she deploys a variety of vocal techniques in the performance of ancient and modern Hebrew texts, among them the "Book of Creation," an early Kabbalistic treatise. Victoria draws inspiration from ancient traditions, which relate to the voice, mouth, and Hebrew letters as tools of creation.
She will perform some of her existing repertoire along with new work being developed during her recent residency at UC Berkeley and the Magnes Museum. Forbes Magazine chose Victoria as one of the 50 most influential women of 2015.
This is definitely not your parents type of Chanukah concert! (And at a church, yet)
