Madrigali: The Music of Gesualdo and Monteverdi
MADRIGALI: The Music of Gesualdo and Monteverdi The secular musical form known as the madrigal took Europe by storm during the sixteenth century. In the madrigal, the composer attempted to express the emotion contined in each line, and sometimes individual words, of a celebrated poem, frequently the poetry of Petrarch. In Italy, the madrigal was the most important secular musical form of its time and madrigal composers were held in public adoration akin to cult status. Come find out what kindled the passion of Renaissance Italy with this concert by San Francisco Renaissance Voices (Assistant Music Director, Katherine McKee, conducting) and guest artists lutenist Adam Cockerham and Phebe Craig harpsichord, featuring the exquisitely chromatic and ardently avant-garde music of Carlo Gesualdo (1566-1613) and masterpieces from the hand of the ultimate word-painter, Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643)
