Food Between Shadows: A Refugee Resistance is a food pop-up and premiere of artist books about food, migration, war, and resettlement featuring Genevieve Erin OBrien: performance artist, Tammy Nguyen: founder of Passenger of Pigeon Press, and Patricia Nguyen: Executive Director of Axis Lab. This event brings together three Vietnamese American artists from Los Angeles, New York City, and Chicago to explore placemaking through art, food, and dialogue.

The Refugee Resistance menu is part of a performance series based in social practice by Genevieve Erin OBrien, focusing on a participatory process and less centered in outcomes. Identity is rooted in food, for the refugee even more so. Food is the anchor that tethers refugees to home, a home that exists in neither time nor space but somewhere in memory as a ghostly specter.

Featured Bartender: Jennifer Nuky Pham is one of Chicagos beloved nightlife connoisseurs, a member of Axis Lab, and a second generation Vietnamese American taking over her fathers pharmacy, Mini Thuong Xa. Mini Thuong Xa is the first Vietnamese owned and operated business on Argyle Street in the early 1980s.

The event will be open to the public and take place at First Sip Café, a new coffee shop opening on Argyle Street owned by two 1.5 and second generation Vietnamese American sisters, Ngan and Gigi Hoang, whose parents first restaurant business, Cafe Hoang, is just down the road on Argyle Street. This arts and food initiative helps support a historic area for Southeast Asian immigrants and refugees.
