FUJIKEN CARL STONE 2/8/13 at 8:30PM Electric Lodge inaugurates its Alternate Currents series with Carl Stone, who makes his only 2013 LA appearance Friday, February 8 at 8:30PM. Hailed by the Village Voice as "the king of sampling" and "one of the best composers living in (the USA) today." Carl Stone has used computers in live performance since 1986. A Los Angeles native, Stone now divides his time between California and Japan, where he is on the faculty of the Information Media Technology Department, School of Information Science and Technology at Chukyo University. His works have been performed in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia, South America and the Near East. Reviewing his last LA appearance, November 2011 at the Getty for Pacific Standard Time, Mark Swed reported it was "a night of sonic wonder."
The performance will take place in Electric Lodge's lovely and acoustically fine dance studio, with a sound system generously provided by L&M Arts. FUJIKEN was composed in 2012 in Tokyo Japan where Carl Stone resides for much of the year. The work seamless blends field recordings made through Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Japan) with found and appropriated music, processed and resynthesized in Stone's unique and unmistakable style. In the words of the New York Time's Steve Smith
(Carl Stone's) music was a powerful stimulant with lingering euphoric effects. Voices stretched like taffy were folded into ghostly choruses; the whine of a stringed instrument became a mosquito arabesque. Noises normally rejected, like surface scrapes and static bursts, provided fertile sonic lodes."
The performance at Electric Lodge will be the US premiere, and the first time ever in a full quadraphonic realization.
