Tasting Seminar: Nebbiolo with Tenute Sella and Ettore Germano

Oliver McCrum Wines and 18 Reasons are delighted to offer this very special nebbiolo tasting class, during which we will taste 10 nebbiolos as well as a small flight of white wines from both winemakers.

The reputation of the Nebbiolo grape has soared in the last twenty years, and some wines made from it are now amongst the most sought-after fine wines made anywhere. This exalted reputation is however largely limited to wines made in the Barolo and Barbaresco areas; the handful of Nebbiolo-based appellations in northern Piedmont have not yet made the same impact. The existence of these appellations is an exciting prospect for Nebbiolo lovers, the soils and climate are different from those found in the Langhe, and the range of possible flavors therefore also different. It's like discovering your favorite author wrote several books that you didn't know about.

We are fortunate to have with us two outstanding producers of Nebbiolo based wines, Cristiano Garella from Tenute Sella in Northern Piedmont and Sergio Germano from Ettore Germano in Barolo.

Cristiano makes the wine for the historic Sella Estate in Lessona and Bramaterra, two very small DOCs about an hour a half drive north of the Barolo Zone. From a young age, Cristiano has shown incredible talent at crafting perfumed elegantly styled wines using traditional winemaking techniques; he is definitely a winemaker to watch.

Sergio Germano makes wine from his family's property in Serralunga d'Alba. Sergio has really grown up as a winemaker since we began working with him some 10+ years ago and we are now proud to say his Barolos stand up undoubtedly to any of the best producers of traditional Barolo in the zone. We will taste a range of wines from each producer from their base Nebbiolos to their finest single vineyards.
