Yes, Ms. White Lady
Gay City Arts presents: Yes, Ms. White Lady by Imani Sims
Yes, Ms. White Lady was born out of an experience the director took through a sound and digital exhibition Natasha Marin created for PUSH New Media Festival in August of 2012. During the installation, a Black Femme voice could be heard shouting "Yes, Ms. White Lady" as people milled through the exhibit. It occurred to the director that this was not an act of servitude but rather a way to "dis[s]pel[l]" the micro aggressive way whiteness demands role play from the Black Femme/non-binary identity.
This show will explore the generative performance and text journey of five Black Femme/Non-Binary identified folk. We will uncover issues of race, gender, and sexual empowerment through sound and movement. In the current social climate, it is imperative that the black voice serve as direct opposition. This show hopes to grant space and healing for the Black Femme/Non-Binary voice. As an audience member, your job is to simply witness.
