Cuarteto Latinamericano
Cuarteto Latinamericano: Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2012, Cuarteto Latinamericano is known worldwide as the leading proponant of Latin American music for string quartet. This award-winning ensemble from Mexico consists of the three Bitrán brothers (violinists Saul and Arón and cellist Alvaro), along with violist Javier Montiel. The Cuarteto has recorded most of the Latin American repertoire for string quartet, and the sixth volume of their Villa-Lobos quartets cycle, recorded for Dorian, was nominated for a Grammy award in 2002 in the field of Best Chamber Music Recording, and won a Latin Grammy in 2009. Touring regularly throughout the world, the Cuarteto has received numerous awards including the Mexican Music Critics Association award in 1983 and three times (1997, 1999, and 2000) the "most adventurous programming" award from CMA/ASCAP. In this tradition, the group has premiered more than 100 works written for them. As an ensemble dedicated to giving back to the musical community, the Cuarteto created the Venezuelan Latin American Academy for String Quartets which seeks to advance the work of young string quartets from the National Youth Orchestras of Venezuela.
