Dominique Fricot
"Charisma cannot be taught. It cannot be practiced in a rehearsal space. You cannot take a course on charisma. Dom has it. He has it in spades."(Marty Zylstra of Vancouver's Sweetheart).
After toiling in the trenches of the Vancouver music scene for the past decade, Dominique Fricot is finally starting to hit his stride. With his commanding stage presence, unrivaled songwriting skill and ear for creating pure pop masterpieces, Dominique owns the stage with his rich baritone and his emotive fusion of rock, soul, folk and jazz. Don't believe me? John Lucas of the Georgia Straight says: "Fricot's plaintive vocals and knack for melody invite comparisons to Chris Martin and Adam Duritz". Legendary local producer Jeff Dawson has called him 'the new Neil Diamond'.
He's got the credentials to go along with the musical chops as well, having toured with bands across Canada for several years. Getting his start as head songwriter and frontman for the alternative rock group The Painted Birds, Dom crisscrossed the continent multiple times. The band had the distinction of being selected for the 2009 Peak Performance Project top 20, taking part in an intensive week long workshop designed to hone their skills as musicians. The Painted Birds also showcased at several renowned festivals including Canadian Music Week, NXNE, the Western Canadian Music Awards, Sled Island, JunoFest and the world famous South by South West festival in Austin, Texas.
After The Painted Birds decided to go their separate ways, Dom took a few months off for some personal time and self-reflection, debating whether he could continue on his own. Luckily for us, he couldn't resist the call of the stage and pressed on, playing live shows around Western Canada, building a rabid fanbase on the strength of his performances. After experiencing a particularly painful breakup (can anyone say 'male Adele'?), he channeled his heartbreak and loss into his music, creating the songs that would lay the foundation for his next two EPs (2011s 'The Head and the Heart', and the forthcoming 'If Baby Could Walk'). The songs run the gamut from breezy, Jack Johnson-esque pop to haunting piano ballads that wouldn't sound out of place on a Coldplay album, and perfectly encapsulate the highs and lows of falling in and losing love.
Whatever you call him, the comparisons don't do Dom justice. He's a true original, a one of a kind talent, and a rapidly rising star. Don't miss his unique blend of charm, stage domination, and relatable, heartfelt music when he tours in support of the new EP starting May 15, 2012.
Wand:
Wand (formerly First Nations) is Victoria, BC's Derek Janzen. He began quietly recording and releasing homemade alternative music from out of his bedroom in the cold, dark north of Grande Prairie, AB since 2008. Wand has since moved out west to further his musical opertunities and broaden his creative horizons. Over the years he's played with some great acts, including Radical Face, Cousins, Mike Edel, Happy Trendy, and Stacy Lloyd Brown.
When playing live, Wand incorporates trumpet, drum machines, various synths, delayed guitar and driving percussion to create their unique and grandiose sound. When doing solo shows, Derek builds large arrangements piece by piece using looping pedals and samplers. While they are influenced by quite a diverse amount of artists, some of the most prominent are Sunset Rubdown, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Deerhunter and Phil Collins. South African electro, choral, and gamelan music are also influences.
