Buckeye Knob to Jack London State Park Hike
Buckeye Knob to Jack London State Park Hike Buckeye Knob (Eliot) Property Saturday, November 11, 2017 10:00am-3:00pm
Buckeye Knob, located on the east side of Sonoma Mountain, is a privately owned property and forever protected through a conservation easement donated to the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District (the District) by the property owners. The 52-acre property is located on a highly-visible, south-facing hillside and includes grassland, oak woodland, and the lush upper canyon of Carriger Creek. Sonoma Ecology Center naturalists will share their natural history knowledge while we get an invigorating workout into our weekend. Hikers will explore the canyon first, and then climb to the top of the knob for a picnic lunch while enjoying spectacular views of Sonoma Valley, the Mayacamas, and San Pablo Bay. Following lunch we will explore the East Slope Sonoma Mountain Ridge Trail, out to where it connects to Jack London State Park, and then return back through Buckeye Knob. This is an intermediate level hike with some steep ascents and descents. We will hike approximately 5 miles, and there is some elevation gain and very uneven footing. There is no charge for the outing, as it is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who fund the District's work with a quarter cent sales tax.
