Please join us on Friday, December 15th at 7pm for a live performance by two phenomenal Memphis songwriters, Chris Milam and Lanita Smith. They will each perform solo and share music from their collaboration with the "Memphis to Mersey" project earlier this year.
The Memphis Music Mansion is a private home that is transformed into a listening room for special artists on special occasions. Both Lanita and Chris have been guests at the house but haven't performed for a live audience there. Their show will wrap up the house concert season for 2017 and we're all in for a treat.
The performance is inside, up close and personal. Space is limited so reserving a seat in advance is key. It's BYOB and we have community buffet, adding to the casual and relaxed environment. Bring a dish and your favorite beverage and we will take care of the rest.
General Seating Reservations are $20// Advance Only// No Walkups
Once you reserve a seat, you will receive detailed information about the venue and parking.
CHRIS MILAM Following a broken engagement, Chris Milam lost everything but what he could fit in his car. Then, while on tour, that carand everything in itwas stolen. During that tumultuous year, Milam went to the studio with a dozen new songs that grapple with loss and define his sound. He emerges after months of recording with an eagerly-anticipated slate of new material, a collection of songs called Kids These Days (Released April 7, 2017).
Milams gift for melody and lyricism revisits earlier comparisons to Simon & Garfunkel (Bookends). But this album also evokes richly-orchestrated works by R.E.M. (Automatic for the People) and Chris Bell (I Am the Cosmos). Reflecting the songs themselves, Milams voice has matured: plaintive vibratos shift in a flash to a shout, growl, or croon.
From its first moment, the title track typifies an album full of inflection points, exploring the ways in which Kids These Days arent kids any more. The LP tells a story of heartache and recovery while each song examines a different answer to an underlying question: what now?
Ive read about my generation growing up for a long time. But were herewere in our twenties and thirties. And I know a lot of folks who, despite hard work and good intentions, arent where they thought theyd be. Maybe theyre even starting over. I hope that, by telling my story, other people see theirs in it.
Kids These Days examines loss while seizing the opportunity for change. This isnt a break-up record; its a break from record.
