Painting Churches by Tina Howe
Directed by John O'Neill. In this finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Mags Church, a successful artist, returns to her childhood home to help her parents: her flaky, jabbering mother, and her absent-minded father who is tumbling into senility, move to a smaller place. She hopes to finally paint their portrait. She is surprised to learn that her father has declined more than she imagined, while her mother grows increasingly weary of his absentmindedness. How will Mags paint a portrait that portrays her subjects authentically while she deals with the changing dynamics of her relationship with her aging parent's? Full of comedy and poignant moments, this beautifully written play was first produced in New York at the Lamb's Theater in 1976, where it ran for 206 performances. When playwright Tina Howe was asked if the play was autobiographical, she responded: "It's all true but none of it happened". The Classic Theatre of San Antonio's production opens on February 7th and stars Allan Rosss, Terri Pena Ross, and Christi Eanes.
