Yukon Nonfiction Festival: Advocacy Writing Workshop with Dr. Monia Mazigh
Since 2002, Dr. Monia Mazigh has been advocating the Canadian government on issues like national security, rights of Muslim Canadians, Canadians detained abroad for political reasons. She developed experience that can be transferred to other fields. How to continue the struggle without getting discouraged? Where to find inspiration to continue the fight? What strategies to use to make the government listen? Monia Mazigh will answer these questions and more and try to inspire other to conduct their advocacy work.
Dr. Monia Mazigh is an academic, novelist and human rights advocate. Born in Tunisia, she immigrated to Canada in 1991. Dr. Mazigh was catapulted onto the public stage in 2002 when her husband Maher Arar, was deported to Syria where he was tortured and held without charge for over a year. Dr. Mazigh campaigned vigorously for her husbands release. In January 2007, her husband finally received an apology from the Canadian government. Dr. Mazigh authored Hope and Despair in 2008 which documents the ordeal and the campaign to clear his name. She has written two highly regarded novels that explore Muslim issues. She lives in Ottawa with her family.
