Pilgrimage: Why I'm Not An Indian by Elaine Magree
Elaine Magree's solo show Pilgrimage: Why I'm not an Indian is an unexpectedly funny and disturbing road trip. She returns to the reservation she visited as a child to untangle the secrets of her mixed heritage and to find a proper resting place for her mother's ashes. Braided into that journey are flashbacks from her troubled childhood and her troubled ancestral past. An intensely personal family history is revealed as fiercely ignored national history. The resonance between the two histories vibrates and intertwines throughout the play. And what the heck should she do with those ashes?
Pilgrimage is fun for dysfunctionals, genealogists, historians, social activists, anyone who loves their family despite it all and for the deeply hopeful.
What part Indian are you? And what's up with the ex-nun and the box of ashes? Elaine, intrepid lesbian, turkey-baster mom, and childhood abuse survivor sets out at age 60 to untangle the story of her mixed heritage. If only that were all she'd inherited from her dramatically disturbed mother. Take a journey of irony, outrage and irreverence. Fun for dysfunctionals, genealogists, social activists, anyone who loves their family despite it all, and for the deeply hopeful.
