Puccini's Suor Angelica
Set in a convent in Sienna, Italy in the late 17th century. Suor Angelica has lived the life of a pious nun for seven years since her noble family banished her to the convent for the birth of an illegitimate son. Since then, she has lived without contact with her family or the outside world. Unexpectedly the Principessa, Angelica's dowager aunt, travels to the convent to demand that she relinquish her rights to the family fortune because of her fall from grace. Callously she tells Angelica that her son, of whom she has thought of each day for seven years, had died two years prior. Overcome with grief, Angelica has visions that her son is call to her. In despair she drinks a poisoned potion to end her life. Realizing the gravity of her sin, Angelica prays to the Virgin Mary for salvation. As the other nuns watch, the Virgin Mary appears with a small child, and together they lead Angelica to Paradise .
