WORDS & MUSIC
Theatre students at Marin School of the Arts will perform a mix of their recent works in an evening's entertainment WORDS & MUSIC. Directed by Rodney Franz, the production runs the gamut from comedy to tragedy, including monologues, scene work and song. William Shakespeare, Harold Arlen and Irving Berlin are some of the authors featured.
The evening features scenes from Jane Anderson's Defying Gravity, a look at the 1986 Challenger disaster. With poignance and humor, the play examines our need to reach beyond ourselves and dare the universe. Defying Gravity artfully interweaves the past with the present. It links the lives of participants and bystanders, drawing parallels among painter Claude Monet's artistic quest, the zeal of the teacher selected to be the first civilian astronaut, the memories of her grieving daughter, the aspirations of elderly tourists who dream of hotels in space, the guilt felt by a NASA mechanic and his girl friend's fear of heights.
WORDS & MUSIC opens Friday, January 18, at 7:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center at Marin School of the Arts, 625 Arthur Street, Novato. Shows continue January 19, 25 and 26 at 7:00pm with one matinee on January 20. Tickets will be available at the door or in advance online www.brownpapertickets.com or by calling (800) 838-3006. Admission is $5 for students and seniors, $15 reserved, $10 general.
