U.S. Senator Chris Murphy on Gun Control
LET'S TALK ABOUT GUN VIOLENCE WITH SENATOR CHRIS MURPHY AND LOS ANGELES CITY ATTORNEY MIKE FEUER.
When is the right moment to talk about gun violence? We believe that time is now -- with the Senate's leading voice on the subject, Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who will be joined in conversation with Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer.
Before becoming a Senator, Chris Murphy served as the Congressman representing Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and 6 educators were murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Having seen the devastating effects of gun violence up close, Senator Murphy emerged from that tragedy as one of the Washington's most outspoken gun violence prevention advocates.
Senator Murphy is adamant that Congress stand up to the gun lobby and pass common sense measures to curb gun violence. He believes Washington's inaction makes them complicit in this daily bloodshed, which is why he led a 15-hour filibuster force Senate votes on measures to confront this epidemic of violence and save lives. The debate on gun violence is often emotionally charged and divisive, despite more than 90% approval for tighter background checks. Senator Murphy will discuss what is reasonable to demand, what is realistic to expect, and what citizens can do. Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer has been at the forefront of gun control legislation for over twenty years. A former Member of the California Assembly, Mike Feuer wrote laws including the Crime Gun Identification Act, which requires new semi-automatic weapons be microstamped so the casings reveal the purchaser; and as a member of the Los Angeles City Council, wrote numerous gun laws. Those include banning the sale of high-capacity magazines used to attack crowds in mass shootings; limiting gun purchases to one-per-month to prevent illegal weapons trafficking; requiring trigger lock mechanisms for every gun to limit access by children and others; background check requirements for gun dealer employees; toughening ammunition purchases; and more. He is a founder of Prosecutors Against Gun Violence, a nonpartisan group to deal with gun violence; is on the board of Women Against Gun Violence, and has been nationally recognized for his activism in gun control efforts.
