Adventures in Painting: Mixed Media with Acrylic
Laura Cameron

This is a step-by-step painting class designed for beginners and experienced alike. Participants will see a complete example while following along to live painting to go from blank canvas to completed painting. Materials and techniques will be introduced in a series of steps to complete an 11X14 or 12X12 mixed media painting, beginning with the general shapes and larger background areas first, using acrylic paint and mediums for mixed media techniques. The second part of the class will be spent with adding details with increasingly smaller brushes. Along the way, participants will transfer /or create a basic block-in sketch, how to mix and apply colors, how to hold the brush to make a specific stroke, and other tips and tricks specific to acrylic painting. The materials will be provided: good-quality acrylic paints, and mediums, such as Mod Podge or gloss gel, select handmade papers that can be torn or cut, brushes and other painting materials. Emphasis will be placed on trying out materials and techniques, and encouraging students to bring their own unique style and vision to their work, rather than achieving the perfect copy. Students will be left with a completed painting and a sense of accomplishment.

A New Spin on Valentines: A Card for You, A Card for Me: Artist Trading Cards
Ana Christensen

This class will create artist trading cards while we explore beginning to intermediate collage techniques and design.  Artist trading cards are miniature artworks (2.5 x 3.5 inches) created to trade or give away to others, just in time for the Valentine holiday! The cards are a fun format to explore new techniques and styles for any medium. We will learn how to use a color wheel to inform image choice, how to use scale creatively, and how to approach cutting or alteration of source materials. We will review tools students can use at home for collage projects. In the second half of the class, students will use instructor provided source materials and tools to create 2 - 4 artist trading cards to take home or give away. No flowers or box of chocolates needed - just creativity!

Wednesday, February 28
Paper Quilling Mandalas
Amaranta Ibarra-Sandys

Participants will learn basic techniques of quilling or paper filigree which is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. Moreover, mandalas are especially relaxing to embellish with color because of their circular patterns and geometric shapes.

Ready, Set, Recycle! Giving New Life to Fabric with a Bag or Pouch
Deb Shannon

Transform a garment into something useful! In this class, you will make a pouch, purse, or small bag. Fabric and necessary supplies will be provided for this workshop. Or as an optional component, you can bring along a favorite garment that may be ready for the thrift store, and we will transform it into something of your choice. We'll go old school and learn the beautiful art of hand sewing using the buttonhole stitch to connect your pieces together and then embellish as desired. No previous experience necessary. Bring your imaginative spirit, and we'll supply a selection of threads, closures, rivets, and a few tools to apply rivets!
