The San Jose Youth Symphonys Philharmonic Orchestra, under the artistic leadership of Music Director and Conductor Yair Samet, presents its 2017-2018 Season Opener to be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at 4:00 pm at the California Theatre, 345 S. 1st Street, San Jose, CA 95113.
The opening concert of the season will start with one of Sibelius's most popular works, "The Karelia Overture," and conclude with Stravinsky's "Divertimento from The Fairy's Kiss," a ballet based on a story by Hans Christian Anderson. The concert will also showcase several winners from the 2017 Young Artists' Competition, proudly sponsored by the San Jose Symphony Foundation. These outstanding young soloists are all members of SJYS's Philharmonic Orchestra: Emma Tucker, oboe, performing Mozart's "Oboe Concerto in C Major, K. 314"; David Choi, clarinet, performing Weber's "Concertino in E-Flat Major, Op. 26"; and Bryan Sun, violin, performing Vieuxtemps' "Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Minor"
The San Jose Youth Symphony (SJYS) is one of the oldest and finest youth orchestras on the West Coast of the U.S. Founded over six decades ago as part of the former San Jose Symphony, SJYS has a rich tradition of musical performance and education.
The mission of SJYS is to give young people a foundation for life through orchestral music. We create programs that assure young musicians achieve technical proficiency, musical knowledge and an emotional connection to music. We strive to make each performance for the community uplifting, spirited and exciting.
Today, SJYS comprises 500+ member musicians, ranging in age from 8 to 20, and are chosen from over 650 applicants through our annual auditions. The SJYS comprises 12 distinct performing ensembles: two full orchestras; a chamber orchestra; two flute choirs; a jazz ensemble; two string ensembles; concert winds, saxophone, percussion and harp ensembles.
The Philharmonic Orchestra is the San Jose Youth Symphonys premier ensemble, performing regularly during the season and embarks on biannual international summer concert tours, with its most recent Tour this past Summer, to the Adriatic and Central Europe (Croatia, Austria and Hungary). The orchestra has traveled in previous tours to other parts of Europe (most recently to Spain and Portugal), Asia, and South America.
