The Artist in America an evening with Thomas Hart Benton
Thomas Hart Benton was arguably the most influential and important artist in America between 1920 to 1960. Yet his career really spans from 1910 to 1975 when he was at the center of all art and seemingly every controversy (often he started those controversies). He was influential by his own work popularizing nudes in the 1930s, gigantic murals for Missouri and Indiana (14 feet high and 220 feet long), and founding the Rationalist movement with Grant Wood and John Stuart Curry. He also influenced countless younger artists especially his protegee and near second son the talented and tormented Jackson Pollock!
Tom will take us on a tour of art in the 20th century from modern to regionalism to drip to pop art, and offer his scathing critiques and general reflections about life in America and what it means to be a true American painter and a true American individual!
