NOV 15 Investigating Infrastructure of Power & Control Dhruv Mehrotra
You don't need to be a computer scientist to leverage technology to investigate systems of power and control. This workshop will provide students with hands on examples that they can use to understand the signals that surround them. From cross referencing airplane transponder broadcasts with FAA data, to analyzing the contents of shipping containers, a software defined radio is an invaluable research tool that can yield unexpected results. In this class we will approach the SDR as a general purpose tool for investigating your surroundings. Some tools and concepts introduced will be RTL-SDR, GQRX, and scraping the web for government contracts. This workshop includes the price of a $20 RTL-SDR that participants will be able to take home.

NOV 16 Cryptocurrency & Supply Chain Matching Theory Pam Liou
Decentralized apps or dapps provide a framework for creating custom contracts and protocols for exchange of goods or services brokered by cryptocurrency. Before the implementing custom blockchain and issuing tokens, developers must consider the market design-- how simple rules behave in aggregate. This workshop focuses on applying Alvin Roths matching theory, famously implemented in kidney exchange, college university, online dating, to the supply chains that sustain modern commodity markets. Participants will be given raw materials and tools to fashion speculative supply chain verticals and test their assumptions about building more equitable marketplaces.

NOV 17 CPU Dumpling Shop Taeyoon Choi
Learn how a computer CPU works by making delicious dumplings together. In this collaborative workshop we will perform all the operations of a Central Processing Unit as members of the CPU Dumpling Shop. Participants will chop chives, mince onions, fill and fold dumplings, becoming part of a human computation that simulates a CPU instruction set. You will learn about the bottle neck problem, Von Neumann architecture, ALU, Memory, and Storage. Bring your aprons, knives, and hungry stomach. Dumplings will be vegetarian/vegan friendly.
