TATOMER WINES Graham began working in the wine business at the age of 16 for Santa Barbara Winery. He ended up following one of the more unusual trajectories in California wine. One that led him to specialize in Riesling & Grüner Veltliner. Basically, in Santa Barbara, youre looking at a sea of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Then theres Tatomer whos turning out shockingly compelling expressions of grape varieties not many dare to attempt in California.
Having worked all over the Central Coast in his early years, Graham had the opportunity to work with with many different vineyards and grape varieties. The sites that excited him most are the coldest ones, lending to wines of lighter weight, nuanced flavors, and bracing acidity. Riesling is the ultimate grape to pursue these characteristics. No other grape conveys its region's character and varietal flavor with the power, focus, and beauty the way Riesling does. Graham was lucky enough to work with one of the oldest cold-climate Riesling sites still left in California, Lafond Vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills. This site proved to him that California's coastal regions are cool enough for this grape variety. He has been hooked ever since.
In 2003, he packed his bags and moved to Austria to try to get a better grip on the growing and making of Riesling. He found work at one of the most prestigious winemakers in all of Austria, Weingut Knoll. They also turned him on to the Grüner Veltliner grape. What initially was planned to be a ten week trip turned into a year and two additional harvests. From hand sorting Trockenbeerenauslese at midnight to building stone terraces in the snow using the methods of ancient Rome, he did it all...
In 2008, he founded Tatomer with two Riesling vineyards. His intention was to use the knowledge he obtained abroad to make bone-dry Riesling in California unlike many of the off-dry examples in the marketplace today. He started with a mere 400 cases in a small corner of a good friend's boutique winery. Since then, he has added one more Riesling vineyard, as well as two Grüner Veltliner vineyards and some Pinot Noir.
Graham is a true California wine-making pioneer. In his early years at Tatomer, he was essentially the only person working with these grape varieties in Santa Barbara and pretty much learned in a vacuum. He has ascended into one of the very best winemakers in California and inspired a whole new generation of winemakers to push the boundaries of what is possible.
