MBAA CELEBRATES 35th ANNIVERSARY WITH Legendary Jazz Musician Dr. Herman Green And Jazz Vocalist Sandra Bray!
The Memphis Black Arts Alliance is delighted to present some of the BEST artist in the Greater Memphis area and beyond at Jazz-A-F!RE, held Every Last Sunday of the month from 4-7pm at the Beautiful Brinson's Restaurant & Lounge, located at 341 Madison Avenue, Downtown Memphis. This month, as we continue our year-long 35th Anniversary Celebration, we welcome and honor the outstanding Dr. Herman Green and the dynamic Sandra Bray!
Dr. Green began his musical journey playing on Beale Street with the Newborn family in 1945. After active military duty in 1955, Green became the bandleader for a popular club called the Blackhawk in San Francisco, CA. There he played with artists such as Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane and the Modern Jazz Quartet. Dr. Green went on to play for Lionel Hampton for eight years and then returned home to Memphis where he directed jazz studies at LeMoyne Owen College. During that time, Isaac Hayes featured Herman on his single, Never Can Say Goodbye which was recorded at Stax Records. Dr. Green has played with a many groups around Memphis over the years, perhaps his longest tenure being with Free-World, a Beale Street fixture.
Sandra performed her first solo at the age of 3 at Church and went on to receive a full scholarship to Arkansas State in music. After transferring to the Memphis State University, Sandra was crowned Miss Black MSU in 1980 and was afforded the opportunity to compete in the Miss World pageant in Los Angeles, CA. With a music/performance career that spans over 30 years, Sandra Bray has been featured in a number of stage production including, Little Shop of Horrors, Bee Hive and the ever-popular Black Soap. Her golden voice, comparable to that of Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington & Nancy Wilson, has stirred audiences throughout Greater Memphis in first-class performance venues such as BB Kings, Kings Palace and Precious Cargo.
Memphis Black Arts Alliances Jazz-A-F!RE is hosted by the Spectacular Cequita Monique along with the cool sounds of Prime Cut Trio, as they usher us into the land of Smooth Jazz! Our monthly featured guest artists croon us further up the road and then we end the evening by inviting you, our audience, to join the band on stage in our BYOI (Bring Your Own Instrument) full-out jam session! There is nothing in the city like Jazz-A-F!RE!
