Zappo Diddio
Zappo has devoted the last twenty five years to working and volunteering in child enrichment and development settings as a teacher, after school director, camp counselor/director, children's hospital clown, youth sports coach, art teacher and a mentor to children and young adults.
Spending childhood summers at Camp Winnarainbow, he learned the joys and benefits of living in a diverse, artistic community with an emphasis on social justice with a sense of humor. Through this wonderful experience, and innumerable others, he has developed a passionate commitment to 'pay it forward' by sharing the life changing experience of creative kindness with all those touched by his work.
Recently Zappo founded Cedar Center, an East Bay nonprofit, whose mission is to bring understanding, balance and healing into the lives of children, families, our communities and the world. Through Cedar Center his goal is to work together with like minded teachers, artists, clowns, and child mentors in an effort to provide enrichment and development opportunities to children from all walks of life. To give creative arts and recreation experience to young people through a curriculum that stimulates kindness and compassion towards all people and the planet, while nurturing leaders for a peaceful and sustainable culture.
"In each opportunity to work, play, and commune with the beautiful people of Planet Earth, I strive to employ the gifts of creative mindset, sense of humor, and most importantly, loving kindness." - Zappo Diddio
Zappo is a writer of poetry and songs, a visual artist and photographer, film maker, storyteller and a gardner, and after years of practicing the healing art of Qigong, he is beginning to teach this practice to others.
In the past several years Zappo has been bringing his solo performance to Bay Area theaters. His show is a collection of heartfelt, and comedic stories about growing up in a hippie commune, his work with children and observations of life in the East Bay. He also shares songs and poetry on topics such as grief, resilience, social justice and prayer. His is a performance leaving audience members feeling uplifted, inspired and with cheeks aching with laughter.
"Zappo Dickinson is a beacon of light in the lives of our youth. His teaching at camp is filled with insight, compassion and understanding. Give him your kids and I believe he will help to transform them into universal human beings who spread peace and love throughout their lives." - Wavy Gravy
