Belong: Vancouver Youth Choir and Charles Bruffy in Concert
The Vancouver Youth Choir partners with multi-GRAMMY® Award-winning conductor Charles Bruffy for four days of workshops and professional development, culminating in a collaborative concert.
What does it mean to find a sense of belonging in today's digital and device-driven world?
"Belong" examines different aspects of finding one's place, with works about family, romantic love, home and homeland, friendship, faith, and the growing sense of identity that youth search for and experience as they become adults.
In just four years, the Vancouver Youth Choir has quickly risen to prominence in the Canadian choral scene. VYC choirs have been featured on CBC radio, at the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, and have recently collaborated in performances with musica intima, Theatre Replacement, the Vancouver Chamber Choir, and Early Music Vancouver. This past summer, VYC was awarded first place in its category in the 2017 National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs.
Charles Bruffy's work with the Phoenix Chorale and The Kansas City Chorale has yielded a total of 12 Grammy® nominations and three Grammy® wins. One of the most admired conductors in North America, Mr. Bruffy combines his highly professional approach to music-making with an uncanny ability to reach out and connect with every single audience member, no matter their depth of experience or level of musical expertise. His resulting authentic artistry speaks directly to VYC's performance intentions and aspirations. Says singer Luke McAndless-Davis, "I am sure that this will be a performance that I will remember for the rest of my life."
VYC is known for their eclectic and adventurous programming, and this concert is no exception. Audience members can look forward to music by young Estonian composer Pärt Uusberg, as well as music by Thomas Tallis, Sufjan Stevens, Josef Rheinberger, and Veljo Tormis, and folk music from Romania, Sweden, and Georgia. The concert will also feature the premiere of a brand new commission by Vancouverite Katerina Gimon.
