On Being American
What does it mean to be a real American? Who and what determines individual and collectively shared America-ness? Suarez follows up her critically acclaimed work with On Being American; an intimate, playful and participatory dance-theater project that investigates how we think of, relate to, and begin to understand what America signifies in day-to-day life.
Suarez has spent the past six months gathering stories from a wide range of people in the Santa Monica and Los Angeles area: DACA recipients, veterans, refugees, school teachers, musicians, retired people to name a few. One Vietnam veteran shares a story about how the war changed him. A Vietnamese-American woman talks about the letter her parents wrote her on what they sacrificed to come to the United States. Another explains how his identity is connected to his Native American roots. Additionally, someone shares how growing up Black in America has meant appearances are paramount. These personal stories create the backbone of the work casting light on alternate experiences in America and Christine Suarez and Shelby Williams-Gonzalez further accentuate the work by offering movement based landscapes for these narratives.
We are living in a time that begs us to question the state of this country, as well as our relationship to it. Through dance and performance, SuarezDanceTheater not only provides a safe space, but a uniquely free space to ponder these questions by facilitating potentially difficult conversations with movement as a support system.
