Bayview Cemetery Walking Tour, Jersey City
Join historian Dennis Doran for a Halloween tour of the historic Bayview-New York Bay Cemetery from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, November 5. The event is sponsored by the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy. (Please note that this tour was postponed from October 29, due to the weather forecast.)
Many prominent Hudson County citizens are buried in the Victorian graveyard that lies on both sides of Garfield Avenue in the Greenville section. The tour will pass elaborate 19th century monuments and include stories about the notable people laid to rest there.
The burials include those of several New Jersey governors, state and US senators, two Jersey City mayors, Congressional Medal of Honor awardees, Civil war soldiers, famous architects, distinguished members of the local business community and the first Jersey City firefighter to die in the line of duty. There is a memorial at the graves of about 100 employees of the Cunard steamship line which operated from the Jersey City waterfront for many years. One section holds some of the oldest Jewish burials in Jersey City, dating to the 1850's.
The cost is $10 per person. Meeting point is the center entry gate on Garfield Avenue at Chapel Avenue.
