Tuesdays in the Newsroom: Veterans Reflect on the Vietnam War
A half century after the Vietnam War, veterans still bear the scars of a conflict that divided the country. Now a gripping new documentary series, The Vietnam War, by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, offers a detailed reconstruction of both sides of the costly conflict that has stirred conversation and reopened old controversies. In light of the series and in honor of Veteran's Day, the Gazette has invited several Vineyard veterans who served during the Vietnam War to share their stories and react to the series.
Panelists include Marine Sgt. Gregory Spain of Vineyard Haven; James Bishop, of Oak Bluffs, also a combat Marine; William Stafursky, who served in the Army military police; and Tom Bennett, a U.S. Air Force medic. Mr. Bennett, a social worker and senior counselor at Marthas Vineyard Community Services, has run a support group for veterans for decades. Mr. Stafursky is the veterans outreach coordinator.
The event is part of the Gazette's Tuesdays in the Newsroom series, held once a month in the off season. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. for a brief reception.
