Welcome Yule
COMMUNITIES CELEBRATE THE RETURN OF THE LIGHT The 33nd annual Welcome Yule Midwinter Celebration comes to the Shea Theatre in Turners Falls on Dec. 8, 9, 10. Welcome Yule celebrates the return of the light with a festive family show filled with music, dance, songs and stories to drive the dark away.
This year Welcome Yule travels back to its roots as it celebrates the return of the sun on the winter solstice. People around the globe have celebrated the change of the seasons for millennia. The coming of winter foreshadows cold dark times, but with the Yule sunrise comes the promise of the return of light, warmth and rebirth. In our mythical medieval village, we will join together to celebrate the bounty of the harvest at the end of the old year, and the magical beginning of the new year. As the sun rises through the megaliths of an ancient stone circle, we recall the old ways of nature and religion in a reverent, joyful, community festival.
Welcome Yules signature wassailing songs and carols will be on the program, along with some new music sure to become favorites. Border morris and a mummers play will also be included, along with the passing of the Yule log and the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance.
