Blazing Ahead

Join us for an evening of exploration and fun as Maine author Jeff Ryan leads us on a fascinating journey through the history of Appalachian Trail!

Following closely on the heels of Jeffs popular debut book, Appalachian Odyssey, his newly released Blazing Ahead: Benton MacKaye, Myron Avery and the Rivalry the Built the Appalachian Trail explores the fascinating dynamic between the two men most responsible for the 2,100 mile footpath from Georgia to Maine.

MacKaye was the visionary that brought the idea to fruition. Maine born and raised Avery was the man who gave his life to getting the trail built. MacKayes vision and Averys drive famously clashed between 1934 and 1935, which precipitated a very public falling out. Exploring the subject of what drove two menand what drove them apartmakes for a scintillating read, which is largely set against the backdrop of depression era Maine.

After his book talk, copies of Blazing Ahead will be available for purchase. Proceeds of this event will support Teens To Trails (www.teenstotrails.org), a local non-profit dedicated to increasing outdoor opportunities for teens.
