Dana and Susan Robinson: The Angel's Share UK Tour (part 2)
Dana and Susan Robinson return to Edinburgh Folk Club with the release of their new CD The Angels Share, and continue to explore America's musical heritage through original song and the American and English traditions have long been one of my favourite American roots duos, their old-timey music I think, is absolutely superb great stuff. (Mike Harding)
"Many songwriters such as Bruce Springsteen or John Mellencamp have been heralded as modern day Woody Guthries or keepers of the American rural spirit, but that mantle might be better entrusted to musicians like Dana Robinson who embody both the heart and the soul of folk music." Dirty Linen
Dana and Susan Robinson's music explores rural America with elegant simplicity. Dana's powerful guitar and fiddle playing and Susans delicate, sometimes funky, sometimes haunting mountain banjo sound support their strong voices and intimate harmonies. With an eye for vivid detail, Dana's songs are stories of the American landscape; a raconteur with a rich voice he's a living example of the American troubadour. They bring to their performances an understanding of Americas musical heritage and convey its significance to our culture today.
A multi-instrumentalist (guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo) Dana brings traditional music values into his contemporary song-writing. He integrates guitar styles from influences as diverse as America's Norman Blake and Tim O'Brien to England's Nic Jones and John Martyn. Dana's song-writing has been likened to that of Steve Goodman and Dougie MacLean and he sings with a warm and reedy tenor.
" ... rural America explored with elegant simplicity. Their music and cleanly poetic songwriting bring to mind the great folksingers of our times." Asheville Citizen-Times
Susan brings her rich harmonies, confident vocals and the claw-hammer-style banjo into Dana's music. A natural musician, having played piano and oboe in addition to the fiddle, she took instantly to the guitar and banjo.
Together Dana and Susan complete a circle that allows them to more fully explore their passion for merging traditional and contemporary music. In the easy company of this charismatic husband and wife duo, audiences share stories of their encounters and in the joy they convey performing together.
"Dana and Susan Robinson know where they're going - a shivers-up-your-spine repertoire, sometimes so tight in their playing that you could have some difficulty prising them apart with a knife." Mick Tems, Taplas, Wales.
The Angel's Share is a pared down recording, with no rhythm section and minimal instrumentation leaving an abundance of space to help lift the vocals to the top of the mix. Threads of old-time mountain music, country blues, Celtic, Cajun and traditional folk all emerge through the fabric of Danas original song writing.
" ... musical priorities are beauty and simplicity and these are present in abundance." **** R2
Dana & Susan Robinson are looking forward to returning to the UK and sharing songs and tunes, old and new with their UK fans, old and new.
