At this month's CSI San Diego Chapter meeting, Ray Varela, Design Principal for Carrier Johnson + CULTURE, will share his design for the award-winning Sator and Lattor Science Center at Point Loma Nazarene University. Topics will include merging client philosophy with building design by combining distinctive building materials and unique fabrication details with a cost-effective construction methodology.

Speaker Bio: As Design Principal at Carrier Johnson + CULTURE. Ray Varela has 29 years of experience in multiple project types, including corporate, education, urban mixed-use, multifamily residential and scientific research facilities. As a Registered Architect in the State of California, Ray has a Bachelor of Architecture degree in Environmental Design from Cal Poly Pomona, Pomona and Masters in Architectural Design from UCLA.
Ray is currently working on plans for the new Keck Science Center at Scripps College, in addition to the proposed East Campus Housing at UC San Diego, and the new CORE Library at CSU East Bay. He has recently completed the design of several luxury high-rise residential towers in downtown San Diego--520 West Ash and Streetlights Makers Quarter--and is presently involved with the Tailgate Park Master Plan for the San Diego Padres.
Ray's well-known corporate projects include the Celgene Headquarters at Campus Pointe and SANDAG's South Bay Administration Campus. His award-winning higher education work includes the Sator and Lattor Science Center at Point Loma Nazarene University; the Leo F. Cain Education Center at CSU Dominguez Hills; the Library and Learning Resource Center at Tidewater Community College in Virginia; the Schaal Aquatics Center at UC Davis; Hewitt Hall and Natural Sciences Unit 2 at UC Irvine; and the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice and the Shiley Science and Technology Center at the University of San Diego.
