DESCRIPTION
Yussef El-Guindi's "10 Acrobats in an Amazing Leap of Faith" tells the story of an Egyptian American Muslim family trying to stay in touch with their roots while also letting themselves live their own lives in America. Over the course of one day in Ramadan, bonds will be tested and pushed past the breaking point in preparation of an old family friend visiting from Egypt for a wedding.
We wanted to do this show because people seem to have a hard time grasping the concept that Muslims are people. With, like, nuance and shit. It's something that's incredibly basic, yet we've still managed to find ourselves in a world where that question of humanity is a topic of debate, not a given. Even stories purportedly centered around "the Muslim experience" are too often preoccupied with addressing the concerns we're told to have about Muslims so much so they validate the existence of those prejudices in the first place.
"10 Acrobats" is the story of a family. They're a little dysfunctional and at times wacky, a little different from what we're used to seeing on stage. But that diversity adds to their humanity. They're not solely defined by any one thing, but the tapestry of identities they represent.
