Cascadia Composers presents Music from Cascadia's Frontiers: a program that features contemporary works by a far-reaching roster of composers from the Pacific Northwest, California and across the U.S. performed by Oregon's celebrated Delgani String Quartet. Delgani String Quartet members Wyatt True and Jannie Wei, violins; Kimberlee Uwate, viola, and Eric Alterman, cello, will be joined by Eugene vocal duo Nancy Wood and Paul Safar singing in excerpts from Pauls work, "A Quartet in Red, Black, and Blue." Depoe Bay oboist Greg Steinke joins the quartet playing English horn in his work, "Suspended."
Other dispatches from the frontiers: Latin Grammy winner Yalil Guerra brings us Cuba via Los Angeles in his "A Mil Guerras Solo (A Thousand Wars Alone)," and San Francisco Bay Area member Andrew Robinson, who earned a music degree at Willamette University before embarking on a different career path, riffs on the classic dialectic of string quartets, while current University of Pennsylvania Ph.D. student Joshua Hey contributes his otherworldly "lens flare from Alpha Centauri." The dark finale of the evening, the turbulent "Sixth Quartet" by Portland's own Tomas Svoboda, was inspired by the struggles of the great Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich.
