Blessed Event
When the Jewel Box presented Blessed Event as a play reading last year, the common response to author Jim Hetrick was "How do you know so much about my family?" The reading was so well received that it made perfect sense for director Kathy Currie to bring it to the main stage.
Close, extended, and distended family gather at the side of Charlie, their passing patriarch, reflecting on their relationships and the prospect of life without him. Each of his grown children and spouses (or ex's) arrive to support Gertrude, their mother, and to say their personal farewells. The model of dysfunction, they argue and air their differences, only baring their soul to Charlie's silent form, not realizing that he can hear every word as he tries to comfort each of them in his own way. The audience will recognize themselves in these characters and their experiences.
The play is often funny, sometimes tender, and always familiar, but keep the tissues handy; your heart will be warmed and these characters will touch you. Director Kathy Currie says, "As soon as I read this play I knew the JBT just had to share it with our audiences. This is a production you'll not only want to see, but will want to bring the neighbors."
The show will run Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. from January 25 until February 9. Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. on January 27, February 3 & 10.
Tickets for Blessed Event are $16 for adults, or $14 for seniors/students/military.
