MICHAEL SHAY TRIO CD RELEASE PARTY: "Like a River: The Songs of Jim Harris" w/ Brian Oberlin and Chris Kee plus special guests
http://www.michaelshay.com
Featuring the songs of longtime songwriting collaborator Jim Harris, "Like a River" is an elegant, poetic exploration of Michael Shay's Texas roots. Pedal Steel from Marty Muse (Robert Earl Keen), Hammond B-3 Organ from Portland's "King" Louis Pain, engineering by Chris Shaw (Bob Dylan), and co-writes by Gabe Rhodes (WIllie Nelson) combine with numerous other country and jazz musicians from Oregon, Texas, France, and Ecuador to create diverse and unique soundscapes for songs written by a lifelong poet who few have ever heard perform. A true "cosmic cowboy," Harris' Texas-folk songs are timeless and deep, and they find a special home in Shay's lush baritone voice.
Born in Austin and splitting his down time between Oregon and Ecuador, Shay has previously toured throughout North and South America and Europe, also acting as a cultural ambassador in Ecuador and Colombia under the auspices of the US State Department.
He has performed/recorded/collaborated with Anais Mitchell, Jonathan Byrd, Eliza Gilkyson, Zoe Lewis, Patrick McAvinue, Jordan Tice, Brittany Haas, Phoebe Hunt, Eleanor Whitmore (Steve Earle), Mark Rubin (Bad Livers), Cyril Neville (Neville Brothers), Conrad Choucroun (NRBQ/Patty Griffin), Matt Hubbard (7 Walkers/Willie Nelson), Carolyn Wonderland, Guy Forsyth, Matt Fockler, Johnsmith, Paula Nelson, and many others. After 6 years playing cello in his world music duo The Just Desserts, he founded the bluegrass band Texas Express in 2012. The Michael Shay Trio blends roots-Americana with touches of world music, jazz, bluegrass, blues, country-folk and more. Featuring 3-part harmonies, the Trio always surprises, engaging audiences with virtuosic musicianship, deep lyricism and plenty of upbeat groove. Shay has long been a musical chameleon, creating uniquely inspired and genre-bending collaborations worldwide. The Michael Shay Trio, however, sees Michael reining in his musical "universalism" a bit to put the spotlight on his voice in the context of North American traditions.
Mandolin master Brian Oberlin is no stranger to Portland audiences. His versatility and fluidity across genres (including classical, bluegrass, swing, and country) is what makes him able to play so...playfully!... in The Michael Shay Trio. In addition to his one man, 8-string orchestrations, Brian joins Chris to provide 3-part harmonies on most of the repertoire.
Bass player Chris Kee was a longtime member of Peter Rowans Free Mexican Air Force, performed and recorded with telecaster master Jim Campilongo, was the original bass player with the Waybacks, was bassist and principal songwriter Houston Jones, and multi-instrumentalist and composer with the alt-Americana trio Springhouse. Chris has also recorded and performed with Buddy Miller (including appearances with Buddy, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin and Shaw Colvin), Jim Lauderdale, Norah Jones, and many others. When not performing with Michael, Chris can also be seen with saxophonist Ralph Carney and the Peppergrinders.
Special guest, guitarist Mark Shark has played with Jesse Ed Davis, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Terry Evans, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, John Trudell, Taj Mahal, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, Jennifer Warnes, and Bob Weir. Known for his masterful use of alternate tunings, Mark published the book "The Tao of Tunings" in 2008. Joining Michael for the first time at this show, Mark also performs in Portland with The Bayou Boys, Lloyd Jones, and Ian Miller among others. http://taooftunings.com/about-mark-shark/full-bio/,
