Profs & Pints debut: Science fiction and Washington
Science-fiction writers were ahead of reality in envisioning tanks, jet-packs, moon travel, and a host of devices now part of our daily lives. Today SIGMA, a think-tank of science-fiction writers, seeks to advise the U.S. government on what tomorrow holds. Catherine Asaro, a SIGMA member who counts many works of science fiction among her 26 novels, discusses the science-fiction genre and how its writers have shaped our present and may help determine our futures.
A former physics professor, the director of the Chesapeake Math Program, and a prominent advocate for diversity in mathematics and the sciences, Asaro will also talk about the need to have more women and minority members in our laboratories, control rooms, and space capsules.
Feel free to dress futuristically and bring your space helmet!
