The Servetus Vespers
Via Choralis will be joining forces with the 40-voice Chalice Choir of First Unitarian Church of Victoria for a concert of choral treats. The major work featured in the second half of the programme, sung by the combined choirs, will be a newly commissioned work entitled Vesperae pro Serveto (Servetus Vespers). Based on a new text in Latin by the Rev. Frances Dearman, a Unitarian Minister, this captivating and elegant work is a secular vespers based loosely on the ancient monastic rite sung each evening in monasteries and convents. The texts speak of the quiet of the night, a walk in the woods, and caring for the world as it sleeps. The Vespers will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra of winds, strings and piano.
In the first half of the concert each choir will sing a short programme, including works by Gabriel Fauré, Brian Tate, Matyas Seiber and a new piece by the young Ontario composer Julijana Hajdiniak.
