Participants will break for an hour each day for lunch on their own, except for Friday. Only one registration per person is needed for the full 40-hour class. Attendees are required to participate in all 40 hours of training in order to receive CIT certification.
CIT was developed in 1988 when the Memphis Police Department joined in partnership with the Memphis Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), mental health providers, and two local universities (the University of Memphis and the University of Tennessee) in organizing, training, and implementing a specialized unit. Since that time, CIT has been adopted in communities throughout North Carolina, the United States and abroad.
The training consists of classroom lectures, field visits, and role plays where officers practice de-escalation skills. The individual blocks of training are provided by skilled mental health professionals and, when applicable, first responders who have a particular area of expertise. Additionally, site visits to community resources that support the mentally ill and conversations with consumers and family members provide uniquely important learning opportunities. The final component are role plays in which mental health professionals play the role of consumers in crisis and the CIT officers-in-training practice de-escalation skills.
