The Shadow Box by Michael Christofer is a Tony Award winning play that tells the story of three terminally-ill patients: Joe, Brian, and Felicity. Living with their respective families as they reach the end of their treatment, the three agree to participate in a psychological scheme where themselves and their loved ones are interviewed by a psychiatrist. This show projects the idea that contemporary life has one absolute; to understand ourselves and how we live, it is necessary to have an awareness of mortality. When stripped down to its core, The Shadow Box is not truly about death, but rather, self-realization. Due to the short life span Joe, Brian, and Felicity have, they are forced to evaluate themselves and come to a conclusion about the manner of their existence or lack thereof.
