Four Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30pm: Nov 7, 14, 21, & 28 for $225 At Kingston Writers Studio, 275 Fair St. #11, Kingston, NY 12401 (kingstonwritersstudio@gmail.com)
This class is for any level creative nonfiction writers who have an incomplete draft and need support propelling forward, revising, and finishing an essay. In this class, Chloe will create an encouraging environment while sharing memorable tools to support writers in revising their own work, and bringing their nonfiction to its potential.
Week 1: Start strong: Students will bring in a draft of an essay they are struggling with. We will discuss opening sentences, catching the readers attention immediately by using details, voice, and point of view.
Week 2: Characters and dialogue: Writing about family and friends and loved ones proves difficult: This week we will focus on honoring realistic dialogue and how to be fair to those you write about.
Week 3: Building tension, chronology, and narrative arc. What makes an essay propulsive and satisfactory for the reader?
Week 4: Concluding without a conclusion. The essay ends while life continues. How do you bring your piece to an authentic close without melodrama or a tidy bow?
Goals of this workshop:
Learn to bring an editors eye and objective opinion to your own work.
Learn concrete tools you can go to when stuck in an essay.
Learn techniques to give dimension and conflict to your essay.
Leave class with a personal essay you are content with and proud of.
