Maine Songwriters' Association 7th Annual Songwriting Contest Finals

The Maine Songwriters Association presents the 7th annual MSA Song Contest finals with a showcase that will feature the six finalists in the contest. Sara Trunzo, Stan Keach, Jeff Trippe, Tom McKeon, Jenny Van West, and Giff Jamison will each play two songs including their contest entry. A panel of three judges will choose the ultimate winner at the event. This is your chance to hear some of Maine's best songwriters in a fantastic listening room at Frontier.

Sara Trunzo
Songsmith Sara Trunzo writes the quirks and wisdom of rural northerners  particularly young women  in a fresh and un-romantic voice. While mainstream country music pines over southern red dirt, Sara draws on a decade of running a food bank farm where she helped get local produce into the hands of rural Mainers living in poverty. Her time in the farm fields, fishing boats, community meetings, and food pantry warehouses of Maine add wrinkles to her characters and place to their places. Drawing influence from songwriters like Darrell Scott, Mary Gauthier, and Robert Hunter- she mines the untold story from the unlikely narrator. Sara plays music in Maine with The Dog Hounds and William Joseph Jiordan and in the south, with Britton Patrick Morgan and Casey Lambert. She lives in Unity, Maine and Nashville, Tennessee. Her debut EP thanks birdie is out now.

Stan Keach
Stan Keach has been writing songs for a long, long time.  Many of his songs have been recorded by big-name bluegrass artists.  His co-written song, Whispering Waters, was the Number 1 Bluegrass song on Sirius XM Radio, and was on both major National Top Ten Bluegrass Singles charts.  His song, What the North Pond Hermit Knows, has had over 24,000 views on YouTube.  Keach has written songs for a professional theatrical production and has had a book of poems published.  With his band, the Sandy River Ramblers, and other musical groups, he has recorded 10 albums.

Jeff Trippe
Jeff Trippe has been playing and writing music for many years now. Since his boyhood days in the southeastern U.S., he has had an abiding interest in blues, bluegrass, rock 'n' roll, and instrumental music of all sorts. He has had the good fortune to have performed on some of New England's best stages, including the Stone Church in Newmarket, NH, One Longfellow Square in Portland, and the Cantab Lounge in Cambridge. As a writer, he has been a finalist in the Will McLean New Florida Song Contest and the New England Songwriting Contest.

Tom McKeon
Tom McKeon is a Maine native who has been playing guitar and singing since he was a kid.  He has been working on writing original songs in the last ten years and cites influences including Mark Knopfler, Lyle Lovett, Gillian Welch and Paul Simon.  I learn (steal) a little something from all the songwriters I hear, from Lady Gaga to Michael Hedges, and Im always looking to broaden my scope.  Tom is currently working in a trio with Sheldon Bird and Scott Andrews.  He lives in Brunswick with his wife, Natalie and his young son, Henry.

Giff Jamison
Originally from Minnesota and now a Maine-based songwriter and performer, Giffs playing draws from folk, jazz and rock influences but his roots are country blues and finger style guitar. Dreams make their way into his songs and empty prairies, slow rolling rivers, and lost travelers all find a place in his music. He is a 4-time finalist at the New England Songwriters Contest, and in 2013 released Ramone, a CD of 11 self-penned songs recorded at Frog Hollow Studio in Brunswick. A new CD is in the works  really. Giff performs throughout the Mid Coast as a solo artist and in the company of fellow songwriters and musicians. http://www.reverbnation.com/giffjamison

Jenny Van West
With a crystalline voice that has been characterized as somewhere between Aimee Mann and Bonnie Raitt, songwriter Jenny Van West released her first album Something Real in 2015 and the EP Honey & Hive in 2016, both produced by Ed DesJardins in Readfield. Winner of the 2015 Maine Songwriters Association songwriting contest, she will be releasing her new album of original songs Happiness to Burn, produced by internationally-acclaimed singer-songwriter Shane Alexander in Los Angeles, in November 2017.
