Dvoák: Othello Overture Ravel: Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, with Jairo Geronymo, piano Sibelius: The Tempest
Our Shakespeare focus revealed hidden gems from two great composers. Dvorak's Othello Overture manages to pack most of the Moorish general's saga into less than 15 minutes of music, while Sibelius full-scale exploration of The Tempest reveals a composer finely tuned to Shakespeare's final creation. Ravel's Concerto for the Left Hand was created for Paul Wittgenstein, who had lost his right arm during World War I. On first hearing, one would never suspect that so much music can be played with one hand alone! It is a stunning piece of ingenuity and deep pathos, from its mysterious introduction to its masterful cadenza. Jairo Geronymo, now a resident of Berlin, Germany, is a long-time collaborator of LUCO, having partnered on Ravel's other piano concerto, Rachmaninov's 2nd and most recently, Prokoviev's 3rd. We are thrilled to welcome Jairo back again!
