CLD Winter Salon Series at OK Harris Gallery
Contemporary ballet company Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance will be leaping into 2013 with sumptuous grace on January 29th at 6:30pm at the OK Harris Art Gallery. The first of their bi-annual salon series, this evening will feature a return to CLD classics Duet #3, and the first two movements of the critically acclaimed Triptych. This new and intimate setting at OK Harris will put audiences face to face with pieces that have been called both rich and mysteriously beautiful. Both pieces include an original score by composer Scott Killian, a perennial CLD collaborator. A dance created in 2009 Yielding Gently, will also weave through the installations at OK Harris with the precision and masterfully measured emotion of the opening aria of the Bach Cantata #82 and Lavagnino's choreography. The Annual Winter Salon is on Tuesday, January 29th at 6:30pm at the OK Harris Gallery, 383 West Broadway, New York, NY and will include wine and appetizer service. Tickets are $20 gen. admission and $10 for students with valid ID.
Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance (CLD) is a New York City based contemporary ballet company formed in 2000 as a platform for the choreography of Cherylyn Lavagnino. Ms. Lavagnino's choreography encompasses the dynamic extremes of ballet, invoking both rigor and ease to create a passionate expression of the ever-shifting nature of our emotions and interactions. She strives to humanize the ballet idiom by expressing violence, fragility, and tenderness, and the intentioned movement vocabulary creates a dialogue between dance and the human condition. Ms. Lavagnino's work draws a visceral response from her audience, who takes pleasure in the emotion and fluidity of this dynamic contemporary ballet company. The company has been presented for four NY Seasons by Danspace Project in St. Mark's Church and has performed at Symphony Space, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, Dancenow/NYC Festival, The Joyce Theater's "Evening Stars" series in Battery Park, The Field's "Uptown/Downtown" workshop and performance series, three times at Inside/Out at Jacob's Pillow, and at the Chelsea Art Museum. CLD has been supported by space grants from the Baryshnikov Arts Center, company residencies at The Yard and SILO and toured to Vermont Academy and Lyndon Institute in Vermont. The company has received repeated funding from the American Music Center's Live Music for Dance grant and from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
Cherylyn Lavagnino: Artistic Director of Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance and Chair of the Tisch School of the Arts Dance Department at New York University, has an MFA in Dance from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, as well as a BA in Philosophy from the University of Southern California. Ms. Lavagnino has choreographed over thirty ballets in the past fifteen years, and since 2000 most of these have been created for her contemporary ballet company, Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance. Many of the ballets in the company's repertoire were created in collaboration with composers Scott Killian, Jane Chung, Andy Teirstein, and Kyle Olson. Independently, Ms. Lavagnino has created original ballets for Tisch School of the Arts, Princeton University, Booker T. Washington, Kutztown University, and the Monadnok Music Festival. She was resident choreographer at The Yard at Martha's Vineyard in 2000 and received Tisch Faculty Artistic Development grant in both 2006 and 2009. As a performer, Ms. Lavagnino toured nationally as a soloist with the Pennsylvania Ballet with engagements at New York City Center and BAM. She also worked with the San Diego Ballet, Arizona Ballet Theatre, and Ballet Teatro del Espacio in Mexico City. She has performed in a range of classical repertoire and contemporary work by choreographers such as Balanchine, John Butler, Hans Van Manen, and Tere O'Connor. The diversity of her experience as a performer has energized the dialogue she creates between the classical and the contemporary with her choreography for Cheylyn Lavagnino Dance. Ms. Lavagnino teaches professional ballet internationally as a guest artist and in several NYC studios. She has taught at the Paul Taylor Intensive (NYC), at Bates Dance Festival, at Jacob's Pillow, and taught daily company class for the Lyon Opera Ballet. In her role as Chair of the Tisch Dance Department at NYU, where she has been a full-time member of the faculty since 1987, she has directed Tisch's Second Avenue Dance Company for over 15 years. In recognition of her superior work, she was awarded New York University's prestigious David Payne Carter Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2003.
Scott Killian: A well-known composer in the dance world, Killian has composed works for many companies, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Nikolais/Louis Dance, Jose Limón Dance Company, PACT Dance (South Africa) and Phoenix Dance (UK) working with such choreographers as Shapiro and Smith (over 20 works), Zvi Gotheiner (16 works to date), Johannes Wieland, David Dorfman, Bebe Miller, Susan Marshall and Ralph Lemon. As a composer/sound designer for theatre, Killian's credits include The Berkshire Theatre Festival (Resident Composer: over 25 productions), Manhattan Theatre Club, Red Bull Theatre, The Public Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, Shakespeare Theatre (DC), Seattle Repertory Theatre, The Alley Theatre, Shakespeare and Company, The Huntington Theatre, Westport Country Playhouse, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Vancouver Playhouse and Theatre Calgary.
OK Harris was founded by Ivan C. Karp in 1969 in the SoHo district of Manhattan. After having been co-director of Leo Castelli Gallery from 1959-1969 during which time he was instrumental in launching the careers of pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, Tom Wesselmann and John Chamberlain, Ivan broke away and decided to launch his own gallery. Its establishment in SoHo as the first gallery on West Broadway helped inspire the development of the area's fine arts character.
In addition to being at the forefront of the Photo Realist movement in 1969, OK Harris was among the first galleries to exhibit the work of Duane Hanson, Deborah Butterfield, Manny Farber, Richard Pettibone, Robert Cottingham, Robert Bechtle, Marilyn Levine, Nancy Rubins, Malcolm Morley, Luis Jiminez, Jake Berthot, Jack Goldstein, Porfirio DiDonna, Al Souza and Arman.
OK Harris exhibits contemporary art and photography, and on occasion mounts shows of antiques and collectibles. In it's capacious facility, it is able to mount five, one - person shows simultaneously and has seven such exhibitions in the course of a year. The gallery maintains a complete photographic archive on its exhibitions from the time of its inception, available to students and scholars for research, without reservation.
The gallery's main concern is to show the most significant artwork of our time. In the choice of works to be exhibited there is no prejudice as to the style or materials employed. The sole criteria is innovation of concept and maturity of technique. OK Harris' exhibitions over the years have proven soundness of judgment in identifying important artists and established it's pertinent contribution to the visual arts culture.
